I need a new name.
I have been called Little One but am outgrowing my name. My
master thought I was a girl but the vet told her I was a boy
cat.

Nancy,
Apparently, you have been calling Little One Little
One for awhile. Not sure how long you have had the little
one. I have had cats all my life and have found that they
catch onto their names quickly. At least mine always did.
Two suggestions from me. Stay with Little One or if he seems
to recognize the Little in his name, change it to Little
Joe. I think I remember you saying you found out he was a
he.
Carolyn, Rochester, New York
You just wrote that he is mostly
answering to Little One. I know you would like to change his
name. My suggestion is to stay with the Little part and
maybe find a second name that would be appropriate. My
suggestion would be Little Joe. I also loved Chris's NM idea
of Chester. Good luck.
Carolyn, Rochester, New York
When we got our cat she was so little we named her Little
Cat. She was 17 years old when she died last summer and her
name was always Little Cat.
MaryH
Here’s a funny story about naming your kitten. We fell in
love with a neighborhood kitten who was so friendly. I
called it by all names, it wouldn’t listen and would sashay
away. My husband said call it Alice, I did and it
immediately came. She was Alice for a year until we found
out it was a he, so the name changed to Alice Cooper.
Absolutely the most intelligent cat ever!

Hello Nancy,
Judging from the names offered, "Lucky One" seems to be the
best choice. It sounds enough like "Little One" and would
suit a grown-up cat.
It's hard to feel sympathy for people who complain about the
cold in the U.S. In Saskatchewan yesterday, temperatures
were in the -35 deg.C. range with windchills (meaning it
feels like) -53 deg.C. In Alberta, Edmonton had a record
windchill of -56 deg.C.
We were lucky here to not have much snow, but it's hard to
talk about global warming at these days! Heard that a man in
Winnipeg was feeding stray cats at 4 a.m., but I don't know
how any survived. My cat, Sacha, spends the winter in the
sunny window, under the lamp, or on the heat register!
Merry Christmas to all. May the warmth of family and friends
surround you during the holiday season!

Here’s a suggestion for a new name for your precious kitty
kat, Little One……..
How about Noll – pronounced like Joel, except with an N.
Since he’s no longer a “little one”, I used the letters in
an acrostic:
N – No
L – Longer
L – Little
N O L L ! You could spell it Noell, Noall or just Noll. His
name would certainly be unique and definitely a conversation
piece!
Becky
Nancy, I read once that cats do not really recognize their
names but are actually responding to the voice. they know.
Not sure if this is true. However, our cat Bogey ( so named
as he was found under a bush on the golf course when he was
only about 3 or 4 weeks old...we thought it was a hurt bird
chirping but "Birdie" didn't suit a male cat that well)
ignores the announcers on the TV during golf matches when
they talk about someone going for a bogey. I love the name
Little One and think you should just keep on calling him
that since I'm sure that is what he is used to. I'm so glad
you took him inside and Ditto was so good about accepting
him. Since Bogey doesn't know he's a cat ( he even hissed a
himself in the mirror) he would never be so gracious.

I have a kitten that looks exactly like Little One. I call
him Riley. The name suits him perfectly! Hope you consider
that one.

Hi Nancy,
I know I sent in two other suggestions for your kitty's
name, but I thought of another.
How about Leon it sounds somewhat like Little one said fast.
Animals hear syllables so he would probably respond. He is a
handsome fella.

Like the one person said...she might be used to the name
...One..so how about ..Uno..:)
years ago I bought a puppy and didn't name it right away. I
would come home and call...come
here..come here...and the puppy would come running...after a
few days the puppy thought
THAT was her name! So I named her, Kahmere. when I had
her for a walk eople would say, what's your puppy's
name and I would say, Kahmere and would walk a little
closer. I would say noooooo, thats the dogs name! Pretty
funny!

Hi Nancy
I haven't been writing for quite a long time but have been
here copying, printing recipes, and
enjoying kitty stories. Since Little One is not so little
any more I thought of naming him Uno
which is Latin for One.

Hi Nancy and all recipe friends and of course your two furry
assistants, I have enjoyed reading all about your new friend
Little One and finding out he is a boy, Regarding his name
he may not answer to anything else. When a lady gave me my
Smokey he had a different name and he would just look at me
and I renamed him and now he comes to the name Smokey.
Brenda/North Alabama
Nancy,
I also think you should not re-name Little One...I love that
name and that is all it knows.
A stray kitten came to our house when I was a little girl
and I just started calling it Little
Kitten. Well, Little Kitten grew into a large tomcat but I
never even thought to call him
anything else. It was comical, I suppose, to call him by
that name and see a large black and
white ( like your Little One ) come running. But the idea to
rename him never occurred to me.
I love this site and look forward to each newsletter. I
thank you for the enormous amount of time and energy you
devote to it but I know you must love doing it. You are a
very generous
lady to share your life with us the way you do and I really
enjoy it.
I wish each and every one a blessed Christmas and New Year.

By the way, I think Chip would be a most appropriate name
for Little One.

Nancy, Lucky is a common name, his name should be different,
like charmed, he will live a
charmed life, or gift, because he was given a gift of life,
or second for second chance.
something different to remember the day he was found. or
blessed. I like really different
names
HI Nancy,
What about Emo or Elmo for your Kitty's name???I can't open
the page you list all the other
names people sent in.
Always, Dee
Nancy,
Here's another suggestion for Little One's name. Why don't
you call him Liddelun? It sounds
like Little One spoken with a country accent. He would
probably recognize the sound, and no
one would suspect the spelling other than thinking of it as
unique. If Ditto is able to hear
anything, he would recognize the name as well. We all love
and appreciate you.
Irene
Nancy, since your Little One has turned from a her to a he,
& is bigger than you thought,
name it Bo, short for Big One.
Janice From Texas
I think "Jingles" would be a neat name. It was the mouses
name in the movie, "The Green
Mile". The little mouse got squished but was brought back to
life. I have a 3 yr old short hair
tabby that I rescued. When I saw the movie (Ihad tried every
name for a month and no
response from him) I called him Jingles and he answered
back. So he picked his own name. If
I call him Jingle Bells he knows he is in trouble for sure.
He is a Dennis the Menace for sure. A
very Merry and Blessed Christmas to You dear Nancy and
everyone!

Hi Nancy:
Looking at Little One's pic reminds me of years ago, a
Tuxedo cat got in to my garage and
had a litter of two, unfortunately one passed away. I was
able to get the baby to the vet
as the mother was no where in sight, to make a long story
short, she was hiding in the
garage, I borrowed the save a life trap from the Rescue
League and was able to get the
mother in the house. She would have nothing to do with the
baby, I became the surrogate
mother. I named the mother, "Annie" after Little Orphan
Annie and her daughter (who I
thought was a boy) "Lucky" for being Lucky to survive. They
both were Tuxedo cats and
looking at little one brought back so many memories. What
ever you rename him, I wish you
the best of luck, you are very kind and have a warm heart.
If only there were more animal
lovers out there in this world.

My suggestion for your newest cat member is 'Mini Un.' That
would be his full formal name
and you could call him 'Mini.' Mini Un is French for Little
One. How do you know he isn't
French? You didn't know he was a boy either. Ha Ha

Nancy,
I just studied the picture of Little One and think he should
be named "Domino" . I did like the
one suggestion I read for B.C. Lucky is too common.
Anita in Camarillo
Personally, Nancy, I don't think you should change 'Little
One's' name at all. He has been
with you long enough to be familiar with it, and even if he
is not so little any more he is still
'little' compared to humans. I have a tuxedo cat that is
full grown and I still call him 'Little
Man' because he is so handsome in his tux.....
Donna
Years ago we rescued a cat marked like the kitty you are
calling "Little One". We named our cat Patches.....which
would be fine for Little One due to it's markings also.
Whatever you decide will be interesting to read.
Celia--Maine
Nancy, I think you should name the cat Clever, It was clever
of him to find you.
M of Fl.
Nancy, I clicked on Little One's picture but didn't get the
list of names. If Precious isn't
there, that is a good name also. Merry Christmas and a Happy
and Healthy New Year to
all.

Hi Nancy,
I really enjoy your newsletter and appreciate you creating
it every day.
I have a cat named Little One also and got a thrill when I
read about yours. I was very
happy when you made him an inside cat because that is where
I think all cats should be.
Much safer. My Little One was found in a DMV parking lot
over a year ago. She was 7 or 8
weeks old when my son found her. We had 5 other cats and I
told him to name her. He
never gave her a name, so I just started calling her Little
One because she was. I wanted to
name her Zola after the mother of a friend that had recently
passed away, but he rejected
that. She is still smaller than all the other cats.
I think you should keep Little One's name the way it is. He
probably already knows it. By the
way, male cats are much less expensive to "fix"!
Kathy
Hi Nancy, one of neighbors had a dog named fonder, which I
thought was cute. As you can
guess, the dog found them. You really have a cute kiltie,
Founder would suit him. Good luck
in the naming process which is fun.

Nancy, about naming your kitten. Check out "Old Possum's
Book of Practical Cats". It's the
work that became "Cats". There's one segment on how to name
a cat. You'll find it amusing.
In fact, as I type, I can hear the "Cats" music in my head
and will have to struggle to resist
getting out the DVD and playing it.

I once had a small kitten that came to our house, and I was
trying to think of a name for it.
A dear German friend of ours was there and she saw the
little kitten come around from the
behind the house. She said, "Oh! Klina Kotsa!" She said that
meant little kitten in German.
I loved that, and so I named my kitten, Klina Kotsa! Do you
like that name?

Hi, Nancy: After seeing the picture of 'Little One', he is
definitely an 'Oreo'. I noticed that he got lots of
suggestions for 'Lucky', and that is a good name for him,
too. He was really 'Lucky' to find you and move into your
loving home. Bet he never had it so good before, and he
loves it.
Many thanks for all your hard work for all of us fortunate
folks who benefit from your efforts. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU
AND TO ALL YOUR SUBSCRIBERS.

Regarding a name for ‘Little One’
Like many others, I like “Lucky” and “Chance”, also like
some listed below from PetPlace.com
Trooper – a real trooper and color of trooper vehicle
Jackpot – Hit the jackpot with you
Pooka – good luck charm
Riley – Living life of Riley
Oreo – color
Dash – Goes well with Ditto
Hi Nancy...I am a little late naming Little One but looking

And now I want to thank you for your hard work on the

Interesting name suggestions for Little One. Enjoyed all the
suggestions. Since Little One already is familiar with "his
name" as it is, why not shorten it to ONE.......sounds like
a grown up name for him to me!
Must share our 12 yr. old doggie's name. Someone dropped her
off at our place when she was puppy. My husband quickly
learned what a good farm worker she was and decided to name
her Hepper which is a common East Texas word that is used
for "helper". Our much loved dog is truly a helper for us!

Hi Nancy: I love your newsletter. I don't often
contribute---as I usually don't have an
answer but I so enjoy it. Love your kittie stories. Have to
laugh about the "gender" issue.
Years ago a Mother kittie brought her kitties to our house
as she knew we had food and
kitties. Well my husband told the people and they didn't
care. So we had her spay--found homes for two kitties. Well,
my long time vet had passed away and I had to take the
remaining kittie to a new vet to be neutered. Well they
called to say they couldn't neuter it but it would be a
spay. Flash kept her name--and she was with us for 18 years.
Mom was a wonderful kittie and also moved with us and the
crew. She was very special. And you are a very special
person also. You are a blessing to so many of us.

I can imagine the surprise when you found out about the sex
or Little One - My son many
years ago wanted a hampster - I said okay but make sure it
is a male as they are all in cages
together and I didn't want any surprises - well within the
first 24hrs of it living here the so
called male had 7 babies - You could rename the cat to (
Surprise )

Nancy,
My suggestion for a new name for Little One is Angel because
he must be one or Dash to go
with Ditto. When I name my animals I just keep looking at
them and trying out names until
one seems to fit.

Nancy, glad you found out Little One's gender! How about
Chester for a name? You said he
has a problem with broken leg, hip, etc. so I thought that
name would be good! Remember
Chester on Gunsmoke? Here is a web site with lots of male
cat names.

Hi Nancy: I think a good name would be "Lucky Boy" or just
plain "Lucky" because he is so
lucky he found you. I'm happy to hear he had a good checkup
and there are no ill effects
from his terrible injuries.

Nancy try different names on Little One and one will be the
one he responds to. Since he's
used to Little One I'd stick with it. We had a new kitty
adopt us and we just started saying
different names when we got to Frisky he responded, so we
thought he had either been
named that before or something similar. Margaret, Tulsa
Dear Nancy,
I just saw another name on the Animal Site (part of
thehungersite.com group) that would be
my second choice for a new name: CHANCE. These people
rescued a stray dog & because
they were giving him a second chance at life as well as
giving themselves a second chance
to love an animal, they named him Chance. I think that's a
cool name!
Just a suggestion---Merry Christmas, Love,

Nancy, I like the name Little One! But if you must change
his name, how about Mischief? If
he isn't so little, how about a "strong" name, like
Jefferson, Comerford, or Ferdinand. Then
there's Chance. Like, what was the "chance" you would get
another cat!
We once named a cat Chance, because at first check, we
didn't know if he had feline
leukemia or not. We thought he had a 50/50 chance...hence
the name.

Nancy, I have been following the story of 'Little One'. As I
started to read about 'him/her' I
immediately thought this kitty to be a winner. That's the
name I submit for him "Winner".
He's truly a winner to have found you! Thanks so much for
sharing your stories. Of course,
you know, we have the best orange tabby around. We call him
'Charlie Chan', because he
needs to investigate everything. If there is an open drawer,
closet, box, paper bag, etc,etc,
he's there. Once when loading our dishwasher, I went to
close it to turn it on, when the dish
rack wouldn't slide in, and after investigating, there was
Charlie Chan. Hope you have a
wonderful holiday season.

Hi Nancy,
I have a suggestion for Little One's new name. Years ago, a
lady friend of my Mom's had a
siamese cat and his name was Kamir. The funniest thing was
when that cat didn't come home
one day and the whole family was out looking for him and
calling his name, "Kamir, Kamir,
Kamir!".
It's pronounced Come Here!! LOL!

My name suggestion for "Little One" is "Thurber"
That was our cats name and we loved him dearly, but one day
the neighbor let his dog out
when out cat was out and hurt Thurber and we took him to the

four hours. We were all so sad.
Good luck with naming "Little One" and Happy Holidays to

Nancy, the perfect name for Little One is Lucky. He is so
lucky to have you.

Nancy, a a fur mom to 6 rescue cats, I have found that they
learn their name real quick.
Most of the time they don't respond to it because that is
their way of doing things, but they
really do know their names. My kitties even know each others
names. So to change Little
One's name now might confuse him and even Ditto. Even if
Little One grows to 24 pounds
like my Smokey, he will always be Little One to me. :)

Hi Nancy!
Little One is "Lucky" you found him. He couldn't have been
luckier. I am not a cat person but
I appreciate the stories of your family and the care you
take with them.

Also, my suggestion for a new name for Little One is Murphy.

Hi Nancy,
I am going to suggest that you name "little one" which
turned out to be a male "LUCKY" I
think it would be a good name as he was lucky he came to
your house as you brought him
back to health and gave him a wonderful home!
I am an animal lover, it warms my heart to know that others
care what happens to them. I
have a cat living on my deck, waiting for the Humane Society
to call me. I built a house for
her on my table on the deck so she can watch my cats inside,
I would love to bring her
inside, but I have 4 adult cats inside. It breaks my heart
when she sits and looks in my
window. I have a very warm house for her(I still worry if
she is warm enough, but believe me
it is a very good shelter. I finished it off by putting a
cat pad that warms up when she lays on
it. I named her "Sweetie" but I think maybe I should name
her lucky. Good lucky on naming
little one as I am sure you will get made ideas. Thank You
Nancy for all you do and have a
"Merry Christmas"
